Mentoring 101

Practical Ways to Begin to Engage and Mentor Others

I. Relationship Building:

o       Who has God already brought into your life younger than you in the faith?

o       Get together just to visit and see how they are doing.

o       Ask and offer to pray for any of their concerns.

o       Talk about life, leadership, and/or their walk with God.

o       Meet more regularly.  Pray together.

o       See if they’d like to read a book together with you (see resources below).

o       Take a class together (Journey Study, Servant Ministry, or Bible Study).

o       Start a small group just to get some of those folks together (Home Builders, Journey, Journey Life Group).

o       Journey through a daily devotional together (e.g. “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswald Chambers or “A Year with C.S. Lewis).

II. Key Discipleship Topics You Could Cover: (see for postings on our online leadership community).

o       Ask if they have ever made any kind of faith commitment to God.

o       Insure that they have an assurance of salvation.

o       Talk about living the Spirit filled life.

o       Have them share and write their God Story.

o       Help them develop a regular habit of study in the Word.

o       Help them develop their prayer life.

o       Ask if they have ever memorized and Scripture.

§        Talk about its benefits.

§        Memorize a passage or verse together.

§        Purchase a Scripture Memory Tool Kit from http://cbd.com.

o       Other topics could include: Importance of Christian fellowship, witnessing, spiritual warfare, time management/priorities, etc.  (see for postings on our online leadership community).

o       Review any topic from the Journey Study or Servant Ministry.

o       Encourage to attend an Emmaus Walk and offer to sponsor them (pick up an application in the church office).

o       Read a book together on discipleship or leadership.
